Study Shows Promise of Possible New Treatment for Fibromyalgia

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved any treatment protocol for Fibromyalgia, a preliminary study indicates that the serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor Duloxetine is effective for the treatment of fibromyalgia — with or without major depressive disorder.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disorder that involves chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and additional accompanying problems, such as fatigue, disordered sleep, cognitive dysfunction, irritable bowel syndrome, psychological distress, and other functioning impairments.
To date, treatments for Fibromyalgia have been only partially effective and usually of little benefit. Despite treatment, many of those diagnosed with Fibromyalgia remain persistently dysfunctional and are often functionally disabled.

“Advances in Understanding and Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FMS),” a conference that took place on April 15-16, 2005 outside Salt Lake City, Utah, was designed for both patients and health-care providers.
A day-and-a-half continuing education program for health-care providers covered research updates, and the latest tools for diagnosis and treatment of these complex conditions. The health-care provider program was scheduled for all day on Friday, April 15, and the morning of Saturday, April 16.
