Upset over what they call quality-control problems, the FDA seized millions of tablets from GlaxoSmithKline plants operating in Tennessee and Puerto Rico. The drugs seized were Paxil CR, which is among a class of antidepressant medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and Avandamet, which is used to treat type 2 diabetes.
According to the Web site, Paxil CR is used to treat social anxiety disorder, depression, and panic attacks. The drug, which is believed to treat chemical imbalances in the brain, is also sometimes prescribed to those who have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
The New York Times reports that the FDA said that alternative medications exist for both Paxil CR and Avandamet. It also reported that the FDA does not know of any patients who have been harmed by the poorly made pills. The FDA added that patients can safely take any pills they have remaining.
