Mycoplasma refers to any parasitic, pathogenic microorganism of the genus Mycoplasma. Mycoplasma lack a true cell wall, are gram-negative, and need sterols such as cholesterol for growth. In humans, one species referred to as “pleuropneumonia-like organism” is a primary cause of nonbacterial pneumonia.

“Advances in Understanding and Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FMS),” a conference that took place on April 15-16, 2005 outside Salt Lake City, Utah, was designed for both patients and health-care providers.
A day-and-a-half continuing education program for health-care providers covered research updates, and the latest tools for diagnosis and treatment of these complex conditions. The health-care provider program was scheduled for all day on Friday, April 15, and the morning of Saturday, April 16.

News from The CFIDS Association of America is that: “On July 14, 2005, the National Institutes of Health issued a Request for Applications (RFA) titled ‘Neuroimmune Mechanisms and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.’ The announcement states that approximately $4,000,000 has been set aside for successful applications, including an intention to fund 6-10 new studies.”

Nevada CFS Research Center
CFIDS.org is reporting that, thanks to the work of advocates Annette and Harvey Whittemore whose daughter Andrea has struggled with CFIDS for more than 17 years, the state of Nevada has approved funding for a state-of-the-art clinic and research center for Chronic Fatigue [and Immune Dysfunction] Syndrome and cancer research. Many of the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia also overlap with those associated with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). Exposures that trigger MCS, which is also sometimes referred to as chemical hypersensitivity, sick building syndrome, or environmental illness, can result in symptoms of fatigue, difficulty concentrating, depressed mood, memory loss, weakness, dizziness, headaches, heat intolerance, and arthralgias (joint pains). Depending on the individual and the severity of the person’s MCS, symptoms can be triggered by perfumes, public restroom and other room deodorizers, exhaust fumes, insecticides, and scents from laundry and cleaning products, general cleaning supplies, and nail polish or nail polish remover, to name a few.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which is sometimes also referred to as Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E. or ME), is an illness characterized by prolonged, devastating fatigue and other symptoms, such as sleep disruptions. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder also characterized by the devastating fatigue and weakness associated with Chronic Fatigue; however, its symptoms can also include muscle tenderness and spasms, sleep disturbances, irritable bowel syndrome, and other body disturbances. How You Can Be a CFIDS Advocate
Advocacy efforts to increase CFIDS awareness is not just a one-day event.
The May 12th, 2005 Virtual Lobby Day resulted in 2,516 messages being sent from the The CFIDS Association of America Grassroots Action Center to lawmakers and media professionals. In addition, messages were delivered in person by 58 CFIDS advocates who conducted nearly 80 meetings on Capitol Hill!

The e-mail alert service, formerly known as C-ACT, now has a name that better reflects the purpose of this advocacy group: the Grassroots Action Center Listserv (GAC listserv). This CFIDS Association’s new Grassroots Action Center has generated almost 10,000 messages of support for increased Chronic Fatigue Syndrome research and awareness to senators, representatives, other members of the federal government, and members of the media.
