Medical or health conditions that affect you and continue over a long period of time are call chronic illnesses or chronic diseases. And, even though some chronic illnesses are due to your genes and genetic makeup, others are actually due to lifestyle choices. The aging process can play a major role in the development of a chronic illness or disease too. In general, people tend to be a little more vulnerable to developing chronic illnesses as they get older.
Chronic illnesses can include conditions like high blood pressure and cancer. And can also include things like diabetes and COPD. Then there are other conditions like liver or kidney disease that may linger for years and give you problems. These too are considered chronic illnesses.
The reason why they are called “chronic” is because they can’t be cured for the most part. And they continue to affect people for most of their lives. But, even though they can’t be cured most of them can be managed. Chronic disease management usually comes in the form of medications or treatments such as dialysis.
